I never Quantum and Woody when it came out. I had been told that it was funny and that I would like it by my local comic book store owner, yet I just never got around to actually picking it up. Maybe it was because it was from Acclaim, maybe it was because I had no idea who Christopher Priest was, maybe it was because I was too busy picking up what felt like 18 different X-titles and 6 different Spider-books. Whatever the reason I didn't check it out, it was a mistake.
I finally picked this book up as I began my get myself back into comics experiment and so have been looking at some of those books that had passed me by. Since the days when Quantum and Woody was gracing our comic shelves, I have discovered who Priest is thanks to his humorous runs on Black Panther and Deadpool and I realized that I enjoy his melding of over-the-top humor and action.
The structure of the first issue is quite unusual as the story unfolds as a series of blackout sketches, or quick scenes based around a single joke or plot point. I read somewhere that Priest did this because he thought origin stories were always a little boring. What I can say for this issue is that it is many things but certainly it is not boring.
One issue in I can say that Quantum and Woody veers a lot more towards the comedic than towards action but that is all for the best. I'm also amazed at how well artist M. D. Bright reuses panels to heighten social awkward scenarios to hilarious levels.
