We Demand Respect

I'm tired of comic books being treated like the red-headed step child of popular culture. Time and time again comics are ignored in favor of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter ,Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Matrix or whatever flavor of the month is popular at the time. Now, I think all those things are smokin' and all but they can't hold a candle to comics. Face it: Darth Vader is a rip off of Doctor Doom (George Lucas has admitted the influence); the Matrix was storyboarded by Geoff Darrow and Steve Skroe (two great comic artists) and the Wachowski's are adamant comic fans; Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Spider-Man, Harry Potter is the Books of Magic and while the Lord of the Rings is epic it ain't got nothing on Earth X or Age of Apocalypse. So, if you enjoy these films you might be called a geek (unless it's the Matrix, then you're hip and edgy) but you'll be respected much more than if you enjoy any comic.

So, what's to be done about this?

Protest movies.

Don't go to them, don't buy them. Do you know how many issues you can get for the price of a movie ticket or how many trades you could get for the price of a special edition DVD? Instead of getting a loved one the latest Bruce Willis movie at the next holiday, give them a copy of the Authority (unless the movie is Die Hard 2: Die Harder or Hudson Hawk those are Willis gems meant to be treasured).

I will personally boycott and protest the opening of the next Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Matrix and Harry Potter movies. These movies can be appreciated later, comics must be appreciated now!

On a mission from God,
Guy Ryder
